Notes

Several Spanish releases of seem to exist, and this appears to be another, thus far unidentified release. The stamper numbers resemble this Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II, but the labels and sleeve are definitely different (like the S.G.A.E. rights box is missing). There is no bar code, but the condition of the jacket suggests an age something younger than 1969. I’m leaving the date at 1983 for now, but subject to change.US 1st pressing (with the 1841 Broadway address on the labels), featuring Robert Ludwig's "hot" mastering on both sides. These were withdrawn early because the high bass levels caused low-grade cartridges to mistrack, leading people to return the album on the belief that it was defective. Another engineer was then hired to recut a much less "hot" version of the album, and that is the far more common version.

On some copies the Sterling Sound credit, "SS", appears in both runouts following Ludwig's "RL", and on others the "SS" appears only in the Side Two runout. The "RL" will still appear in both runouts.

This sub should only be used for copies with "RL" in both runouts, as only these are the true "RL" pressings which command hundreds of dollars (albeit in Near Mint condition). Later transitional pressings which featuring "RL" on only one side and another engineer's work on the other should receive their own subs.

"PR" in label matrix denotes a Presswell pressing.
"LW" in runouts indicates Longwear Plating metal parts.
"AT" in runouts indicates Atlantic Studios mastering
"W" in runouts indicates that blank lacquers came from the company Audiodisc.'CRC' on CD.

CD manufactured in USA by Memory-Tech Inc.
Inserts printed in U.S.A.2nd Chile Pressing
Red labels.
Single matte sleeve.Track titles (except B4) appear in English and Spanish on sleeve and labels.

On labels: (P) - 1972.

Labels include "MO" suffix (indicating Monarch pressing) and "Mfg By Atlantic Recording Corp., 1841 Broadway, New York, N.Y.".

Some copies came with one or two hype stickers: one mentioning Whole Lotta Love and the other with a tracklisting.Originally released in 1969.

Center etching includes 1977 among other designations.

Super hot cut mastered vinyl with around 6db boost, nice sound but has light distortion on the loud parts. With cheap cartridge and phono amp this vinyl sound bad. also hard to find without surface noise.

I just bought one on Discogs, and when it arrived it had the RIAA sticker on it (not disclosed). I really want to get the Hot Mix for listening, I am not a collector or in it for the money. Any suggestions on what to look for? I am just confused with all the variants, and also there are many RL mixes, but only the first run or so were the Hot Mix. Thank you.
Xellerlu
No! No! No! You have it wrong! Just because it has RL in the deadwax does not mean it is a hot press. There are a ton of RL pressings and reissues (Gold Record Award sticker). The first couple hundred thousand are the hot press anything after that is not a hot press. It takes some serious research to figure it all out and discogs info is kind of wonky...

ltsulu I just bought one on Discogs, and when it arrived it had the RIAA sticker on it (not disclosed). I really want to get the Hot Mix for listening, I am not a collector or in it for the money. Any suggestions on what to look for? I am just confused with all the variants, and also there are many RL mixes, but only the first run or so were the Hot Mix. Thank you. ALL of the RL pressings are the 'hot mix'. ALL OF THEM. Check the deadwax on your copy, and if you see "SS" and "RL" etched in the runout, you're good to go.As I understand it though, most copies with the RIAA Gold Record Award sticker are not RL pressings, and hence they are *not* the 'hot mix' - the non-'hot mix', which is reputed for being muddy and heavily reverberated, will probably have 'AT' in the runout. They are not cut by Bob Ludwig.

I have a copy of Led Zeppelin II that I have not been able to find any information on the dead wax markings. They read as follows:Side one: ST-A-691671-T, Side two: ST-A-691671-U. I have found the numbers and letters up to the last "T" and "U". Can anyone provide any information on that? Also, my copy has the "Gold Record Award" sticker on the front. Any info on that would be appreciated as well. Thanks!
Mataxe
I have a copy that I am hoping that someone can help with, looks like a Monarch hot pressing?? But not listed anywhere, here's the runout Matrix: side A: ST-A-691671-JJ-REPL (a circle with MR in it) △14158 AT(2-2) M B: ST-A-691672-JJ-REPL (a circle with MR in it) △14158-X AT M
Nalmezar
Have one with the same matrix runout in my collection as well, hoping to get help too!
Elildelm
The hot pressing as listed here has RL on both sides of the runout. This is not the same version.
Daron
Nope, have not gotten any more info about this wax.
Moonshaper
Hi. I have this one too. Did you got some more info about?
Manemanu
Again, due to the credits / identifiers , one would assume that this version is a RL copy. This needs to be addressed. Please reply back . Thanks
ndup
Look at the runoff groove by the center labels. If you see a RL etched on the record, then you have a RL pressing.
Jusari
I purchased an lp that was listed under this description.Because of the credits / barcode and other identifiers , I assumed that the lp would be an RL / SS version. Am I right or wrong ?
Naktilar
Some consider this Monarch press the holy grail of Zeppelin II records.
Jaiarton
I just found mine in a bulk buy of mostly classic rock records. I still can't believe it. I'd grade it somewhere between a G+/VG, but the jacket is a solid VG+. This thing sounds HUGE.
Faulkree
Why do some prefer Monarch "MO" over others like Presswell "PR"? Is there really a noticeable difference?
Yozshubei
I didn't know any "gold record award" stickered lps were real RL mastered.
xander
This means it is a repress with a median selling price of $20. This is not the hot mix...
Gnng
Exactly the info I came here for ... thank you for sharing. Mine too has the "Golden Record Award" sticker
Natety
I also have a Monarch RL copy with the 'Gold Record Award' sticker
Weetont
I have one with gold label. None of the other hype stickers though.
Thetalen
I have a copy of this pressing with Variant 2 of Side 1 and believe the "E2" etching mentioned in the Discogs version details to actually be the initials "EF" in cursive, which exactly match the initials image of sometime mastering engineer Ed Feinblatt (see https://www.discogs.com/artist/4543201-Ed-Feinblatt). Likewise, Side 2 is also Variant 2, whereas the "E4" etching is actually "EF" as well. My copy does NOT have the E A S T stamp on the Side 2 label, however.

My wife found this at a fracking yard sale for $3.00, she gave it to me and I cleaned it with my wet/dry cleaning system. Very little if any surface noise, quiet in between songs!! RL SS on both sides in the dead wax!!!! Holy Fracking Sh!t!! Sounds Amazing! Pride and Joy in my Collection!!! Blow's all my Zeppelin albums out of the water! Plays LOUD!!
Mavegar
That's awesome....I've got a Presswell, Monarch and Colombia Pitman RL Cut. They all sound fantastic in what I would call VG for the Monarch and G+ to VG for the other 2. The presswell is cool because it has the real narrow runout on side 2, just looks means. Its just a fantastic pressing and it sounds like yours is at least VG and probably a VG+ or better. Not bad getting a $200 to $250+ album for $3. Congrats.
Ximinon
Mine has matrix runoff side a: ST A 691671 A P LW W AT RLMatrix runoff side 2:ST A 691672 A P LW AT RL SS WLabel numbers and address match up otherwise and it definitely sounds like a ludwig hot mix.
krot
I have this same release you are talking about. I haven't been able to find a specific page for that version so I am just going to go with this.
Beranyle
on my copy of this album the listing is the same on the record and sleeve as posted on this site but the songs "what is and what never should be" and "heartbreaker" are switched on the actual vinyl,is that a mistake or were they all like that? and if so are they more or less valuable?
I think they're all like that. I just bought a copy of this version and those songs are also switched so I think all the copies have the same mistake.
